Getting an internship is just the beginning, and it isnt the most important part of the internship process. Sure it may have been tough finding an internship and getting an offer, but the truth is that the value of doing an internship is based mainly on how you decide to handle the internship based on what you have to offer. Thats right the burden is on you to make the internship successful and to perhaps even turn your internship into a full-time job. Its leid about the company telling you what to do its about you showing your value through your o wn initiative, motivation, and personal and professional skill set. So, youve landed your internship, and it starts in a couple of weeks. What now? Well, have you thought about what you can do to research the industry and find out mora about the company? Going into an internship with ideas on how you can help the company make changes or be more competitive will go a long way to having the company view you as a professional rather than a summer intern. College students often provide companies with the know-how and technological knowledge that some of their most respected and long-term employees lack. To become even more valuable to your company, be willing to teach co-workers some little tricks of the trade when it comes to using technology to create professional presentations or for better marketing of the companys product or service using all of the social media tools that are available. Read Important Literature and Trade Magazines About the Field It is a must if you want to get ahead. Impressing your supervisor from the get-go will set you up for more interesting and varied projects since you will be seen as a valuable member of the team from the very beginning of your internship. Read press releases about the company as well as its competitors. What new trends are coming up in the field? How is your company positioned to make headway with these new trends? Are there ways that you can help the company become more established online using things like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Plus, Digg, YouTube, plus manymore that are more specific to certain niche markets. Take Time to Review the Companys Website Take time to review and learn about the company, its products and services, and the employees who currently work there. Check out current employees LinkedIn Profiles so that when you begin your internship, youll feel that you already know your supervisors and co-workers. Be prepared on your first day to go around and meet people and i ntroduce yourself. Taking the initiative to meet your co-workers will help set a good tone for your ability to establish personal and professional relationships. Get Yourself a Mentor Finding a good mentor can be enormously helpful to you during your internship. Not only will you learn the tricks of the trade quicker, but you will also learn about what goes on behind the scenes and have a better understanding of the office politics. Having this knowledge beforehand can help you avoid certain hot spots and better know what you need to know to move ahead in the company. We cant stress enough the value of a good mentor. If you find someone within the company that you respect and that you seem to hit it off with, why not ask them if they would be willing to mentor you during your time at the company. They will probably feel honored and believe us you will be so glad that you have someone that you feel you can trust and that you feel has your best interest at heart.

Just Starting Management For your first job in management, its important to trust your training and preparation while also being prepared for the unexpected. One of the best things young managers can do i s embrace a team mentality. Your employees will know you are new to management, so use that to your advantage. Let your staff know you need their feedback and input, but also make it clear that your decision at the end of a process is the one that stands. Most employees will appreciate being a part of the process, and by directing the team, youre taking your first steps toward gaining experience as a manager. Experienced Manager Once you have had several years of experience in management, you will have had time to make some mistakes and achieve some successes in the real world. To improve, you need to learn from your experiences- both the good and the bad. By showing that you can build something positive from both your successes and your failures, youre showing that you have potential to advance to a higher management role. Management Pros and Consultants As a veteran manager, you have a lot share in terms of professional knowledge and experience managing different and diffi cult opportunities. However, you also know there is always more to learn. Industries and management trends always are evolving, so what worked several years ago might not be as effective today. How#8217;s Your Elevator Pitch How#8217;s Your Elevator Pitch Whether youre looking for a job or a promotion or just meeting someone at a restaurant, youre selling yourself all the time. So hows your elevator pitch? They say the most effective listening takes place within the first 30 60 seconds of a conversation. Thats pretty quick. After that, your listener may have already you tuned out. Even before that, experts suggest that as soon as someone lays eyes on you theyve already made an opinion about you. Oh well. So much for unbiased opinions! Its up to you to make a great first impression quickly. This natural phenomenon has startling implications for the job seeker unprepared for an interview, the new co-worker making introductions, or the employee late for work and rattling off excuses to upper-management. But heres where the basic tenets of the elevator pitch can help. The traditional elevator pitch is a carefully-crafted (and concise!) sales technique used to sell a product or service. The theory behind it can be used just as well to sell yourself during an interview or casual conversation. With elements of the elevator pitch thrown in, anyone can answer the simple yet complicated question: Tell me about yourself. Some basic elevator pitch rules to follow: 1) Be Clear: Dont mumble, speak up, measure the tone and flow of your sentences. 2) Be Brief: Simplify. Less is more. 3) Be Evocative: Bold words! Transform your message with powerful statements. 4) Be Targeted: Know your audience. Dont say anything inappropriate. Think about who youre talking to and their status position relative to yours. 5) Be positive: It should go without saying. No one wants hear your depressing drivel. It should be noted that this list also functions as a complementary set of rules that can be used throughout ones career, or even life. If life is sales, then sales is one elevator pitch after another. Start selling.

Job Survey Finds Less Happiness, More Frustration for American Workers Job Survey Finds Less Happiness, More Frustration for American Workers Specifically, when asked when they expected to retire, 28 percent of respondents said between the ages of 66 and 70, 15 percent said between 65, and 13 percent said older than 76. Just 33 percent reported an expected retirement age of under 65 years. Regarding career choices, 59 percent of respondents said that would choose a different career if they could go back in time. When given the work-life balance options of a better workspace or a better commute, 62 percent opted for a better workspace leaving 38 percent wanting an improved commute. When asked whether they would prefer a 5 percent raise or two weeks of vacation, 56 percent would take the raise where 44 percent would opt for more vacation. Regarding financial safety nets, 27 percent of survey respondents said that they have no savings to rely on in case of unemployment, 26 percent have just one-to-three months of savings, 15 percent have four-to-six months, and 13 percent have at least a two-year financial cushion. More than half (51 percent) of employees said that the primary way to get ahead in their jobs is through internal politics. Just 27 percent felt hard work got promotions, 18 percent reported initiative as the primary method of growing their career, and 4 percent said creativity.

Employees Want Better Workplace Communications Employees Want Better Workplace Communications Companies are investing substantial resources to create great corporate cultures and employee experiences, yet they are using outdated and ineffective methods to communicate with their employees, Keith Kitani, cofounder and CEO of workplace communications platform  GuideSpark, said in a press release about the study. Employees expect communications from their employers regarding a wide variety of subjects, including healthcare enrollment details and  Department of Labor regulations. Most companies deliver these communications via postal mail or mass emails, both of which are easily missed or ignored by employees. Some organizations disseminate the information through managers who do not specialize in human resources and are therefore ill-equipped to convey the information or answer employee questions. Its important to remember that one size does not fit all, Kitani says. Companies need multiple types of content to reach all of their employees in ways that work for them. For example, not all employees are sitting in front of their computers, so having content delivered via mobile is important. Employees want a personalized, interactive, multi-content, multi-device experience. Employer-employee communication was very much a one-way street in the past. Today, however, employers can use technology to gather meaningful data on topics such as how content is consumed, which devices employees use, and which media types are most effective. I think its important to look at how employees consume content in their daily lives, says Kitani. The consumer market has already given us a great blueprint for this, and what weve learned there can be applied to todays workforce. With all the digital noise, companies should understand that employees cant consume information in huge chunks; it must be digestible over time and on demand. In the survey, 54 percent of employees said they learned about company announcements through their colleagues around the proverbial water cooler. This type of communication can be unreliable and inconsistent, and it is not guaranteed to  reach everyone. Many employees also indicated that they received  company announcements through managers. With todays increasingly distributed workforce, however, its not a good idea to rely on face-to-face interactions to receive important news in a timely fashion. Furthermore, many employees â€" especially millennials and Gen. Z-ers â€" use visually engaging social tools to communicate, but their employers are still using traditional text-based and word-of-mouth methods. Maintaining effective communication with employees at every  point in their tenure â€" from the earliest stages of the hiring process all the way through to retirement â€" is critical for company success, but organizations face big challenges to  doing so. One of the biggest challenges is the disparate communication methods used by the various groups involved in the employee life cycle. When the recruiting team, the compensation and benefits team, and the learning and development team all use different methods, communication can become fragmented. By delivering a consistent digital experience throughout, not only is it easier for employees to follow along and digest information that is both timely and relevant for them, but also it reinforces a companys culture, tone, and style â€" something thats missing from static, text-based materials, Kitani says.
